AI Overviews now appear on more than a quarter of Google searches, and a growing slice of questions never reaches a list of blue links at all — the answer is synthesised on the spot. That shifts the goal of content from ranking to being cited. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you become the source an AI quotes. The good news: it's roughly 90% just SEO done well. The new 10% is what this guide is about — the specific moves that get ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode to name you.

What actually changed

Classic SEO competes for a ranked list. AEO competes to be the sentence inside the answer, with your name on the citation. The fundamentals still gate everything — useful content, crawlable structure, genuine authority — but the winning shape of a page changed: it has to be quotable.

The signals that earn citations

  • Lead with verifiable statistics. Embedding specific, citable numbers is the single highest-impact move — one analysis pegged it at a ~40% lift in citations. AI engines love a concrete figure they can attribute.
  • Stay fresh. Perplexity favours content published within the last 12 months. A visible, recent date and genuine updates matter more than they did for SEO.
  • Answer one clear question per page. Synthesis engines lift clean, self-contained claims. Bury the answer and they skip you.
  • Be where the engines look. Reddit accounts for a remarkable share of Perplexity's citations — community presence is now a discovery channel, not a vanity one.
  • Build durable authority. ChatGPT outside search mode answers from what it absorbed in training, so being broadly referenced over time keeps you in the answer even when nothing is retrieved live.

A short checklist

  1. One question per page, answered in the first paragraph.
  2. At least one specific, sourced statistic near the top.
  3. A real, recent publish/update date.
  4. Clean headings and direct claims an AI can lift verbatim.
  5. Presence in the communities your buyers actually read.

The clarity this rewards is the same clarity that makes a good prompt work — say one thing, plainly, with evidence. It's no accident that the discipline behind a system prompt that travels across GPT, Claude, and Gemini is the same discipline behind a quotable page.

Where this fits

AEO is a bet on where attention is going, and the search market numbers say the bet is sound.
